Resignation from Membership of Myanmar National Committee on Women
February 19, 2021
Gender Equality Network (GEN) is a network collaborated with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement since 2008. Aiming to provide technical support to democratically elected governments for mainstreaming gender in laws and policies at national level, GEN actively participated as a member of Myanmar National Committee on Women (MNCW) formed according to the National Strategic Plan for the Advancement of Women (NSPAW) enacted on October 13, 2013.
However, due to the current situation in Myanmar, GEN believes that supporting and collaborating with the State Administration Council, which seized power in an undemocratic manner, is against all our beliefs and values, including those of democratic principles and human rights. In this situation that majority of people are protesting against the State Administration Council formed by military and asking them to respect election’s result, GEN, as a network valued the standards of democracy and human rights, will stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar.
For these reasons, we hereby announce that GEN resigns from membership of the MNCW today, and will collaborate again at the time of restoring democratically elected government.
